  • 1.  Sites for multiple Edges

    Posted 04-15-2019 05:36
    Hello,

I would like to configure/install 1 Edge per Data Center.

    Configuration : 2 Edges Active-Active LoadBalancing (2 Data Centers)

    1. This implies that the Edges must be assigned to 2 different sites ? One Site for Primary Edge and the second one for the Backup Edge
or I have to create only one Site and assign both Edges to it ?

          2. What is the point of creating multiple sites?

    Hi Charaf,

From an architecture and design perspective there are a few things to keep in mind:
    • Genesys recommends an N+1 configuration for Edges. This is both for resiliency and redundancy. Electing for a single Edge at a data center diminishes that value.
    • Phones register to two Edges.   (Not primary and secondary in the sense of order but in redundancy should the connection to one of them be impaired or and Edge goes offline during an upgrade for example.) PureCloud can direct the call via the second Edge to the phone to see if it can make the connection.
    • Sites are typically set up per area so that voice traffic can be kept as local as possible improving the quality of the call.  The phones local to that area pair to the edges in that area to handle the calls.
    • When phones register they are assigned to the edges either in their site or if there are no sites set up then the phones will register to any of the available Edges.  They automatically balance themselves over the resources available.
By creating sites the collection of phone are grouped to a local collection of edges ideally.  For example if you have multiple data centers globally and are not using Sites then when the phones pair to available Edges it may be traversing countries or great distance which would create sub optimal calls.

Also if you set up sites, phones currently can not register and pair themselves across sites.  The resources have to be within the site.

Hope this helps with your understanding of the current parameters.

Thank you for your answer @Jim Hennessey

So, what is the most suitable configuration for the example below, knowing that :

    - Both Edges will handle calls from France, UK, Germany, Italy and other European countries
    - Only Two Data Centers where we install the Edges (DCs are geographically located in France)

Your help would let me better design my architecture.

    Appreciate your help

    Kind Regards

    Hi Charaf,

There is a bit of art and science in laying out an architecture specifically in regards to cost and business risk tolerance.  The following link on our resource center covers a lot of different variable that should be considered.

    https://help.mypurecloud.com/articles/single-core-architecture/

Installing one Edge in each data center gives geo-redundancy (also assuming that the Edge is sized to accommodate all the traffic based on volume) should one of the data centers become unreachable.

    https://help.mypurecloud.com/articles/bandwidth-calculator/

It is important to remember that the Edges (assuming they are going to be in a single site or group) must be able to communicate with each other (without latency) so that must be considered in your connection between the two data centers.

I would highly recommend considering engaging with Genesys Professional Services for some consultative services if you have questions or concerns regarding your specific architecture layout.   it is most cost effective to get it sorted out prior to installing equipment and setting the trunks.
