  • 1.  PureCloud Voice Limitations and Virtual Edge Capacity

Before I open a ticket with what should be a simple question, I figured I would ask here first.

What are the limitations of PureCloud Voice and what is the capacity of a virtual edge server when using PureCloud Voice?

Technically, it's advertised as unlimited concurrent call capacity, but I cannot find anything in the resource center related to scaling. I know virtual edges are limited in capacity, but I don't know what those limitations are or how the system determines to add a new edge and how/when/if that happens automatically. I thought there was a doc or resource page with this a couple years ago, but I cannot find it now.

@George Ganahl any insight on this one?

    Thanks,

It is very important with setting up your ORG on Genesys Cloud Voice or BYOC Cloud that you estimate about 25% call capacity so they can provision the appropriate number of virtual edge servers.  While these are monitored for capacity, they are not auto-scaling and auto-assigned like the microservices, to you will have soft limits based on the capacity of the edges which is about 300 sessions.  We have had customers reach this limit mid-day and it took about an hour to get someone in support to spin up and attach a new virtual edge.  Don't count on that turn-around normally!  I would either use the API or the dashboard to monitor usage of the Edges and be pro-active if you reach into that 25% buffer.

    Hi Robert,

Thank you for the reply. It's really good to know that there is no automation.

Does 300 sessions mean 300 call legs (external caller and internal participant - roughly 150 calls) or is that just an estimated external call capacity of 300 calls? Also, is that 300 per edge? I know there would be other factors, so I'm trying to get an idea of how these stack up compared to physical edge sizes.

    Thanks,

Genesys will have to confirm, but old documentation I had pegged it at about 320 sessions (both legs) unless you are doing things like transcoding or TLS.  I would guess the virtual edges are as good as the large Edge appliances which also match these specs.  Again, let's see if @George Ganahl or @Tom Shallon might be able to chime in here.

Another cog in this thinking will be the new distributed fabric that will allow localized RTP traffic.
