I've seen this issue before and had to use the same workaround (enable/disable roles), but no one has reported problems with that recently.
One thing I still think that should be considered a bug is when you try to generate reports. There is an option to search users by role, but if the role is inherited it does not return anything:

Have any of you come across any weird behaviours of agent profiles when they're inheriting roles (specifically the default user one) from multiple groups and may also have that role assigned to them directly?
I'm come across a few lately where agents don't show up in specific views and occasionally the "fix" is to remove them from one group or from any group so they only have a single association to a particular role.
