  • 1.  QOTM - What is THE BEST Vinyl/CD/Audio Tape of ALL TIME!!

    Posted 08-01-2024 12:22

This is a battle of the ages. We want to know in your very valid, informed, professional, personal, and casual opinion, what is THE BEST CD/Vinyl/Audio Tape of all time?

    What are the qualifications?

    • Cannot have more than two discs.
    • No "best of" or compilation collections.
    • Yes, soundtracks ARE VALID

We want to know if you have one CD to give to your loved ones because it is simply THE BEST! What are you going with?

We all love classics, but I would love to hear some unconventional picks, as you boldly plead the case for why Jimmy Buffet's Changes in Latitude is a must-own. Plead your case, bonus points for originality. Go big, go bold, don't be afraid to get personal.

Oh, and don't forget to nominate your favorite Community Rockstars! Those are the members that go above and beyond to make your time with us simply irresistible, so give them some love and a nomination. It's easy to say thank you!

    We Love You, Community!

People don't expect this choice from me but for me, and for the last 9 years, it has to be Black Veil Brides' "Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones". It is one of those classic storytelling CDs. You start out with a message from F.E.A.R. and the whole album tells the story of the Wild Ones defending their hearts and minds from these predators. I have so many favorites on this album (New Year's Day, Devil's Choir, Days Are Numbered, Nobody's Hero) but my ultimate would be "In The End" because truly, in the end as you fade into the night, who will tell the story of your life?

My youngest daughter and I even roadtripped it from Clearwater, FL to Atlanta, GA to see BVB on their 2018 Vale Tour. She was 13 and that was the year my husband and I decided to take her to see 13 concerts to celebrate her first year as a teenager... she went to 21 shows that year! Music is the binding factor in our relationship and highlights all our highs and lows. We even waited by the bus afterward to have Andy Biersack (lead singer) sign her hotel keycard. Talk about a core memory night!

We saw him on his solo tour for his Ghost of Ohio album 5 years ago - got VIP as a surprise for her birthday so she met him and we were front row center. He sang happy birthday to her and he randomly started singing "Savior" (my second most favorite BVB song because it saved my youngest daughter's life - literally). When the crowd started singing along, he smiled, locked eyes with her, and they sang the whole first verse and chorus together. I was in tears but I have the video saved on my phone to this day.

So yeah, short story long... invest some time in Andy Biersack's band Black Veil Brides or his solo project Andy Black. You won't regret it. Trust me.

This is a really tough one for me. The idea for this question came because I was trying to fall asleep and naturally started rating the Disney soundtracks, wondering which one is the best allaround. Maybe more on that another time.

When I thought of this QOTM, I started weighing, what has variety, can be fun and sad. High and low energy. What inspires creativity, thought, an irresistible compulsion to sing or air guitar/drum along, and of course...STRONG emotion? Do I need to go SFW or can I rep something arguable NSWF (does that matter in my decision)? Should I strive for suggesting something people may not have heard or go with a conventional pick?

The first albums that came to my mind were:

    1. The Killers' Hot Fuss
    2. Pink Floyd's The Wall
    3. Weird Al Yankovich...any/all of them (talk about variety)
    4. The cast recordings for Hamilton, Chicago, and Little Shop of Horrors.
    5. The Space Jam soundtrack? It really does slap.

In the end, I went with a conventional pick, but it is a stunner.

My best friend and I did a sing-along to the Beach Boys for our 7th-grade talent show and won "Most Outrageous Act". That really set the stage for me to adore the Beach Boys, but this album has everything. EVERYTHING. There are many good reasons it tops a lot of lists for Best Albums, and I guess I am left agreeing. It covers all seasons, so many wonderful and complex emotions, but still finds a place for "Sloop John B" which is an ultimate ear worm for me.

Can't wait to hear everyone's picks and give them a listen!

Best vinyl ever for me...I'd have to agree with Pet Sounds, with Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti close second.

This is a tough one for sure - so many contenders. For my choice, I'm going to go with the best album as a single body of work - rather than just its individual parts - and for that, I have to say Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by The Flaming Lips.

This is a hard one since I only listen to the greatest hits on the radio and don't buy albums anymore- at least not since Columbia House stopped 1¢ CD's -LOL

One I remember listening to over and over is Dave Matthews Band - Before These Crowded Streets. As far as Jimmy Buffet goes, Volcano is a great one, but he was always much better live!

If you were to ask my older daughter this question, her favorite right now is my old Britney Spears -Oops I did it again.

First off, I love power metal and epic fantasy in my albums. Gloryhammer and Windrose are some of the great examples. But my all time favorite album would have to be Emblas Saga by Brothers of Metal. It tells the story of norse mythology of Loki and his children and Ragnarok.

My daughter and my favorite track is Track 2, Powersnake. It just hits different.

You can check it out here if you dare!

Love this album too.  I really like their song Other Son of Odin, so good and a little funny too. Brothers of Metal just don't take themselves seriously sometimes and I'm all there for it.

This is really hard. My music tastes kind of change all the time, I will listen something to death and then won't touch it again for years, and this will cross genres too.

    Some honorable mentions:

    • The Planets by Gustav Holst is definitely up there as an all time favorite
    • From Movies, Requiem for a dream soundtrack - Just fits the movie so well, its a little dark but just at the same time strangely beautiful and well made. The Fountain - oh so good.
    • Ten Thousand Fists by Disturbed is just full of hit after hit.
    • Couple of video game soundtracks to be different that take me back to my childhood, and are just awesome soundtracks in their own right. Chrono Trigger, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time

But currently, and this might change tomorrow, top album has to go to Imaginaerum by Nightwish, really amazing mix of moods and pace. There is just something about classic instruments like the violin and flute mixed with metal that tickles my brain in just the right way.

Edit: PSA - If you haven't watched Requiem for a dream, do not go in to it expecting a feel good movie, it is an amazing movie by all accounts, cinematography is amazing, music is amazing, the story though is harrowing.

    So many to choose from.

Whilst Anton's mention of the Planets I have the luck of being born in the same town as Holst and hearing my daughter as part of the choir singing this in Gloucester Cathedral. That always makes the vinyl or CD a little bit less than live.

So this may not be very out there but although my taste is a bit all over the place I have to go with A Night at The Opera by Queen. Regardless of Bohemian Rhapsody, it has such an eclectic mix of song styles. I can't even choose my favourite song as that changes each time I listen.

Wow that's a tough question - there are so many and as having never heard of many of these choices it is making me search and listen hahaha!

For me I am, and have been from a young age, an avid David Bowie fan and although there are many faves I have a couple:

Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars: The Motion Picture Soundtrack

    David Bowie - Hunky Dory

But as I was growing up my older brother was a massive Johnny Cash fan so I had no choice to also become a fan, so I will also need to include this:

    Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison

Part of my problem is that I can't even remember the last album that I actually bought, let alone which is my favorite. Lately I've been getting back into Blink 182's mainstream songs and they span multiple albums. I don't think I ever actually purchased one back in the day.

This is probably the greatest QOTM and also the hardest to answer!

I am a big Foo Fighters fan and love The Colour and the Shape and was lucky enough to see them play live with two other great bands, Biffy Clyro and Jimmy Eat World who also have two of my favorite albums (Many of Horror and Bleed American respectively).

But if I had to choose my all time favorite album it has to been Green Day and American Idiot.  I love every song on that album and the way it flows through a story and even went to see the American Idiot Musical on Broadway when visiting New York.

Few shout outs to other great albums, Queens of the Stone age - Songs for the Deaf, The Offspring - Americana, Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit, Sum 41 - All Killer, No Filler

Going to stop now as the more I think about it the more albums I remember

I'm going to go with Sleep's 'Holy Mountain' album on a heavy original pressing.  It's slow, melodic storytelling and just gut wrenchingly heavy throughout.  One of the most iconic guitar openings in the doom scene opens the whole experience with Dragonaught.  It also feels refreshingly jazzy at times.

The album cover of Sleep's music album entitled Holy Mountain.

I'm a terribly indecisive human being and the pressure to choose is too much! That being said I'm replying with these:
The word vinyl takes me back to my mother throwing on side B of Iron Butterfly and listening to the whole 17 minute song thinking it was amazing.
The first CD I purchased was GNR Appetite for Destruction. Lastly, I always thought the best audio tapes were the ones we'd make that contained all of our favorites, so you didn't have to tote around a bag of multiple cassettes with your Sony Walkman.
