When sharing my certification preparation experiences, many people notice that I rarely emphasize completing every lab exercise. Some may wonder whether that means labs are not important.
Actually, my view is a little more nuanced.
Labs Are Helpful, But They Are Not Always Required to Pass the Exam
For those whose primary goal is passing a certification exam, carefully studying the official eBook should always be the top priority.
Labs are excellent for reinforcing concepts and improving understanding, but if your study time is limited, you can still successfully prepare for many certification exams by focusing on the official learning materials first.
This is why, in my certification study posts, I often emphasize the importance of the eBook more than the labs.
However, that does not mean labs are unimportant.
Never Underestimate the Official eBook
One mistake I see some learners make is spending a lot of time in the lab environment while neglecting the official eBook.
The reality is that the certification blueprint covers a wide range of topics, and the lab exercises typically focus on only part of that content.
Labs help you understand specific features and workflows, but the eBook provides the broader knowledge foundation that the exam is often built upon.
My recommendation is simple:
- Study the official eBook thoroughly.
- Understand the concepts and terminology.
- Use the labs to reinforce and validate what you learned.
The combination of both is much stronger than relying on either one alone.
Certificates Help You Get Interviews, Labs Help You Pass Them
Obtaining a Genesys certification can significantly strengthen your resume and help you stand out during job applications.
A certification demonstrates commitment, learning ability, and platform knowledge. It may help you reach the interview stage more easily.
However, interviews often go beyond theory.
Hiring managers may ask questions such as:
- How would you configure this feature?
- What steps would you perform?
- How would you troubleshoot this issue?
- Have you ever implemented this workflow?
This is where lab experience becomes extremely valuable.
Someone who has only read the eBook may understand the concepts but struggle to explain the actual steps involved.
Someone who has completed the labs has usually clicked through the configuration screens, built the workflows, and experienced the process firsthand.
That practical experience can make a huge difference during technical interviews.
Labs Focus on the Most Important Knowledge Areas
One thing I appreciate about Genesys labs is that they are usually designed around the key skills that Genesys wants trainees to master.
The scenarios are not random.
They are carefully structured to help learners understand:
- Core platform capabilities
- Common configuration tasks
- Important operational processes
- Real-world implementation concepts
Because you actively perform the tasks instead of simply reading about them, the learning experience becomes much more memorable.
Hands-On Learning Creates Long-Term Memory
We've all had the experience of reading something, understanding it today, and forgetting it a few weeks later.
Labs help solve that problem.
When you:
- Create a flow,
- Configure a queue,
- Modify routing settings,
- Build an integration,
- Troubleshoot a configuration issue,
you create a stronger connection between the knowledge and the actual task.
As a result, many of those concepts stay with you much longer than information learned through reading alone.
My Recommendation
If your goal is passing the certification exam, prioritize the official eBook and certification materials.
If your goal is becoming a better Genesys developer and performing well in technical interviews, invest time in completing the labs.
The ideal path is:
1 Study the eBook to understand the concepts.
2 Complete the labs to gain hands-on experience.
3 Earn the certification to validate your knowledge.
4 Use the lab experience to demonstrate practical skills in real-world projects and interviews.
A certificate may open the door, but hands-on experience often helps you walk through it.
