  • 1.  AMA Question - Workspace permissions rollout

    When Workspace was rolled out, there was an underlying permission that was broken. While talking to multiple Support folks, I asked about the fact that the new permissions set for Workspace was not released prior to the rollout and was thus causing a large amount of tickets to come in to our helpdesk as people loaded Workspace and got an error about not being able to save views.

    I was told that this was a "cosmetic error" and that everything except for saving views would work for users until the new permissions were issued. Anyone who has worked in IT will tell you that no error message is cosmetic and will generate tickets, because users are trained to do so when they see error messages.

    Are there any plans to be clearer around new permissions and potentially release them ahead of the product rollout so that admins can assign the required permissions to the appropriate rolls in advance so that error messages like this don't pop up on rollout? If so, when, and if not, why not?

    We've started having discussions internally about how to prevent this problem. @Laurie Nelson has started working with the rest of leadership in our Product Management org to make sure that what happened with this doesn't happen again.​​

    Thanks for the response, but to clarify - is the conversation around preventing bugs like the underlying permission problem slipping through (QA related) or is it around pushing permission sets out to admins in advance of rollout so that we can apply new permission sets prior to go-live? The former is great, but the latter is what I'm focused on with this question. Otherwise, this problem will always occur any time a new feature that requires new permissions comes down the pipe.

    Both, we want to prevent the bug, but also want to make sure you know what permissions you'll need. We can't automatically push permissions out to orgs without the orgs giving consent, but at the very least, we need to make sure every person knows well in advance what they need to add.

    Yeah I'm not asking you to add permissions automatically. I'm asking for the permissions set to be available prior to rollout so admins can then apply them to the appropriate roles prior to the rollout. In this instance, you released the following permission set with the rollout:


    Analytics Tab Configurations All Permissions Assigns all Tab Configurations permissions, including any future permissions
    Cloud CX 3

    Analytics Tab Configurations Delete Delete tab configurations
    Cloud CX 3

    Analytics Tab Configurations Edit Update saved tab configurations
    Cloud CX 3

    Analytics Tab Configurations View Query for saved tab configurations
    Cloud CX 3

    This created an error message for every user that accessed Workspace/tabs until the permissions were added because we had no way to apply them until rollout.

    Ah I see what you mean. Those permissions were actually available for a while, several months at least; they didn't actually get released with this release. That being said we could have been more proactive to ensure everyone knew about those permissions specifically.

    I'd agree, you may want to expand the scope to your internal folks as well, since when I asked multiple folks on a Support call, I was told they weren't available before release.
