  • 1.  How to configure DNS SVR records for new switchover pair during upgrade?

    Posted 02-02-2023 13:28
We are in the process of upgrading our PureConnect environment from CIC 2019R4 to 2022R3.

We have a switchover pair in the current production environment. Two new CIC servers have been built to replace the existing CIC server. We use DNS SRV records _udp_sip for the current CIC servers. We need to setup 2 new DNS SRV _udp_sip records for the new switchover pair servers so that we can test phone registration on the new environment before we go-live.

If we add the new DNS SRV records to the same _udp location we will have 4 records. Old and new UDP registration groups obtain their registration settings automatically using DNS SRV with the same domain name and transport protocol.

How will the phones know which server pair to use? Do we need to setup a separate forward lookup zones for each environment?

    Hi Kristan,

The short answer is, they won't.

    Now for the longer version!

SRV records are only part of the whole picture. What they do is to allow DNS to be used to "advertise" what server provides a particular service for a domain (along with protocol, port and priority, in the case of multiple ones.) They are essentially an extension of the idea of the MX record, which allows DNS be used to find the mail server fro a domain (which in turn, allows you to send emails to an address at a domain, rather than at a particular server.)

So, you need to create a separate domain (or a subdomain, for example, test.yourdomian.com) and put your new SRV records in there.

But there is more to it than that, I'm afraid.

Next, your test phones need to know to use the new domain. This is likely being done via Managed IP phones, so you need to create the Registration Groups etc on the new servers to use the new domain.

    Are we done yet?

No. The test phones also need to know to use the new servers for provisioning. This is usually configured using DHCP Option 160, so you need to update that to the new servers as well.

But now you have another problem - all your phones, when they reboot, will get the new 160 and go to the new server pair, so to prevent this, you will either need to create reservations in your DHCP scope for the test phones, with the new Option 160, or you will need to put them on a separate network segment with their own DHCP server.
