  • 1.  Polycom VVX unexpected firmware upgrade (to 6.4.3 from 6.3.1)

    Posted 07-24-2022 22:18

    Hi All,

On Saturday we had to reboot two of our Polycom VVX 401 phones, and noticed that these devices performed a firmware upgrade from 6.3.1.11465 to 6.4.3.5018.

After this upgrade occurred, both phones failed to get an IP address on the DHCP and the devices needed a full power cycle to restore functionality.

According to the Managed hardware phones release notes for the Polycom VVX phones, the latest release is only meant to be 6.3.1.11465

As of this morning, rebooting any of the existing Polycom phones still on 6.3.1.11465 is no longer triggering a firmware upgrade

Just wondering if anyone else noticed this, and whether it was an accidental release of newer firmware by Genesys?

    Cheers,

And it's just happened again. The Managed hardware phones release notes for the Polycom VVX phones, the latest release is only meant to be 6.3.1.11465, and our VVX401 phones after a reboot are upgrade to version 6.4.3.

This upgrade is now causing a change in hostname from the previous default "polycom_0011223344" to "polycom0011223344" (removing the underscore between polycom and the MAC address).

Any IP address reservations based on hostnames are now failing because the hostnames are unexpectedly changing.

Last time this happened, apparently the release of new firmware was a mistake. Regardless of whether this was another accidental release, or failure to update the release notes - this kind of stuff should not happen with an enterprise-grade platform.

    Hi all,

In response to the VVX hardware revision change announced by Poly, Genesys planned to release firmware version 6.4.3.X on February 8th. Incidentally, prior to February 8th, version 6.4.3.X was made available to users of the Genesys cloud provisioning service. In response to the early release and device hostname altercation, Genesys removed version 6.4.3.X  from all automated provisioning services February 3rd.

-Earlier VVX models with the original chipset that could have updated to 6.4.3 during this period will downgrade back to 6.3.1, at the next provisioning event. The downgrade will revert hostnames to the original format (polycom_xxxxxxxxxx).Note, it is recommended to use device MAC address for DHCP reservations.

-Revised VVX models with the new chipset contain 6.4.3 as the base factory firmware, they will not downgrade to 6.3.1.

In summary, as of Feb 3rd firmware version 6.3.1 is latest available version for Genesys managed VVX phones Version 6.4.4.xxx is under evaluation.
