Hello,
We can use the API to set a message for a presence, but can it also be retrieved historically? I did not come across this in the documentation.

I am actually looking for the free text that a user can add to the status / presence, this gives the systemPresence and organizationPresenceId, but not the status messages.

My apologies. There aren't currently any APIs that return historical data for the presence message. I've created an enhancement request linked to your account for this.
There isn't currently a workaround outside of tracking the presence message yourself. If you use notifications to subscribe to users' presences, you will be notified of each change and can log the presence message in an external system.
