August Question of the Month: What's one thing you thought was true as a kid that turned out to be completely false?

  • 1.  August Question of the Month: What's one thing you thought was true as a kid that turned out to be completely false?

    Posted 20 days ago

Let's have some fun reminiscing for the August Question of the Month. I have a feeling this question might bring up a lot of laughs!

What's one thing you thought was true as a kid that turned out to be completely false?

I'll go first - I thought that if you got rained on, you'd get a cold. I heard that from so many grown-ups as a kid, "You're gonna get sick if you don't dry your hair!" Thanks to the internet, I learned that's just an old wives tale!

Now it's your turn to answer. If you do, you'll get a cool new badge to sport on your profile!

As a kid, I thought quicksand would be a much bigger problem in my life. Turns out it was never an issue at all.😅

Defnitely thought quicksand would be an issue.  When I was a kid, I'd poke the ground with a stick when we went on nature hikes.  It drove my parents crazy because it would take forever to go a short distance.

My Dad was stationed at Eglin Field in Florida with the Army Air Corps in WWII. My mom was there with him. She says that the early nightfighter pilots, who had top secret radar on their aircraft, would answer the question, "How can you see to fly at night?" with, "We eat a lot of carrots." :-)

When I was a kid, I thought that if I trained too much at the gym, I would eventually become huge, like professional bodybuilders. Because of that, my goal was actually to avoid training too much so I wouldn't get "too big." Later, I realized that building that much muscle requires years of intense training, strict nutrition, and a lot of dedication.😅

When I was a kid, I lived in Curiúva, a small town in the countryside of Paraná, Brazil, surrounded by woods. I believed that a ball of fire appeared at night on the soccer field near my house. Because of that, after 7 p.m., we would avoid going near the field and run straight home. It was only later that I found out the story was just a way to keep children from staying out too late!

Growing up in India, I genuinely believed that if I swallowed a watermelon seed, a whole watermelon plant would start growing in my stomach!

Every summer, the adults would warn us, and I was always extra careful while eating watermelon. Turns out, that's not how biology works at all!

Looking back, it's funny how many "facts" we accepted as kids without questioning them. 😂

As a kid, I really believed that if you stepped on a crack in the sidewalk you would break your mothers back. I found out it wasn't true after coming off of punishment, going outside and stepping on several cracks only to find out my mother was unharmed.  Also, let's not forget the Santa Claus myth :)

In Latin America, there are many beliefs instilled in us from childhood. For instance, there is the custom of leaving your teeth under your pillow so that *Ratón Pérez* (the Tooth Mouse) can come during the night to collect them and leave money as a reward. Another very peculiar belief was that if you came back from playing sweaty or overheated, you shouldn't open the refrigerator door, or your face might get twisted out of shape.

Back when I was little, I truly believed that if I caught sight of a shooting star and whispered a wish, the universe would carry it gently into reality. Those nights felt magical, as though the sky itself was listening.

You know, when I was a kid, I kept pestering my dad about how watermelons grew-since they were so heavy-and I was always a huge chatterbox. So, just to get me to stop talking, he told me, "They grow on trees." Long story short, when I was 17, I was chatting with some friends and the topic of watermelons came up; I actually said they grew on trees-LOL. Naturally, there was a lot of laughter after that, and people still laugh about it to this day.

Mine was that eating mango with milk could make you seriously ill-or even kill you! 🥭🥛

Growing up in Brazil, I heard this warning so often from adults that I never even questioned it. For years, mango and milk seemed like a forbidden combination-almost like a dangerous science experiment in the kitchen. 😂

Then I got older and discovered it was just a popular myth. Even better, I learned that mango smoothies and milkshakes are not only perfectly fine, but also delicious!

It is funny how some childhood beliefs stay with us for years, simply because every adult around us repeated them with complete confidence.

As a kid, I asked my mother where I came from. Her answer was that she had found me in a garbage bin. I believed her for quite a few years. Later, when I finally learned where babies really come from, I realized that I had asked a much more difficult question than I had ever imagined, and that it couldn't have been easy for my mom to explain.

Common childhood misunderstandings span several everyday topics:

    Nature and Science

    • The Moon: Believing the moon followed your family car on night drives.
    • Quicksand: Expecting quicksand to be a frequent hazard on everyday walks.
    • Watermelon Seeds: Fearing that swallowed seeds would sprout a plant inside the stomach.

    Adults and Rules

    • The Dome of School: Thinking that teachers lived inside the school building.
    • Car Lights: Believing that turning on the interior dome light while the car was moving at night was illegal.
    • The Ice Cream Truck: Concluding that the music was only played when the truck ran out of treats.

As a kid, I thought the person sitting in the train engine controlled absolutely everything, just like driving a car, steering, speed, signals, and the whole journey!

I imagined the loco pilot was single-handedly running the entire railway network. As I grew up, I learned that there are actually many people and systems involved behind the scenes. The loco pilot mainly controls the train's speed and braking, while signaling and route management are handled by others.

Childhood me really thought one person was out there playing a real-life train simulation game!

This question of the month is fabulous.

Yes, yes, yes to the (not so prevalent) quicksand. And maybe this notion came about because my brother was mildly obsessed with Jaws 4 for a while, but turns out sharks are not as much of a constant threat as I was led to believe either.

I love this question, it reminds of how time flies when you get older. As we grow with time, we want to be an adult as fast as possible because they get to do all the cool things. Once you are an adult, it becomes a reality that some days you are done being an adult to include its overrated sometimes. You just want to be a kid some days.

So true! We spend our childhood wishing we could grow up, only to realize that being an adult isn't quite as glamorous as we imagined. Sometimes all you want is to be a kid again and have fewer responsibilities!

    Hello @Nicole Milliken!

A few things. Leaving Mom's flip-flops upside down would kill her. Stepping on sidewalk lines or cracks in the ground would break Mom's back. You couldn't stay out on the street, or the Bogeyman would carry you off. You couldn't get lost in the woods because of the Curupira...

The elders used to tell me never to mix mango with milk because it could literally kill you.

One day, I took a coffee break, ate a mango, and right after, drank a glass of milk. As soon as I realized what I had done, I panicked. After crying for hours, I went to bed, totally accepting my fate.

A little while later, I woke up from one of the best naps I've ever had in my life 😅.
