Question of the Month: April

  • 1.  Question of the Month: April

    Posted 18 days ago

    Happy April!!

In the United States we say, "April showers bring May flowers." While bunnies are hatching and flowers are blooming, I realize that not everyone in the world is in the spring season. So what question could I ask that is universally enjoyed during this time of year? BOOKS! No matter what the season, a good book is what's up. So I ask:

What book(s) are you reading right now? Or what book(s) would you recommend. If you're in parent mode and only reading children's books, let me know which ones you actually enjoy reading over and over.

I'll go first. I really love mysteries and lately I've been reading the Peter Diamond mystery series by Peter Lovesey. I love the sense of humor in the series and there are always a bunch of red herrings which keep me wanting to read more.

What about you? Can't wait to add these to my book list!

Currently reading "A Gentleman in Moscow" by Amor Towles. Its quite different from what I normally read but still a good book. After that I'm going to sit down and read "Shinsengumi: The Shogun's Last Samurai Corps" by Romulus Hillsborough.

So after not having read a book since college.... I thought I would dip my toe into the water by reading a series of novels based off the Mass Effect video game series. They won't win a Pulitzer Prize but they provide some interesting back story to the games.

I'm reading "Angels & Demons" by Dan Brown and I'm going to continue with "The Da Vinci Code" by the same author. I think they're really cool and they also tell details that aren't seen in the movies.

@Isabella Clutterham Overall, I recommend them. It's a shame I didn't read them first before watching the movies.

Ugh, I had this all typed out and it just disappeared. I will try again, though it may not be as witty and pithy as it's predecessor post...

    1. On the Way to the Wedding - Julia Quinn
    2. The Strawberry Patch Pancake House - Laurie Gilmore
    3. Crucial Conversations - Grenny, Patterson, McMillian, Switzler, and Gregory
    4. Knit One, Kill Two - Maggie Sefton
    5. Gilmore Girls: The Official Knitting Book, Knit Your Way Through Stars Hollow and Beyond

So that is what all I am reading and yes, I realize that I read like I craft (soooo many WIPs) but I never know what I will feel like at any given moment. I should finish the Crucial Conversations on by next week so I will need another one to fill that void.

Oh goodness, let's see if I can remember all the titles I've got going on - and yes, I realize that I read like I craft (multiple WIPs at a time because I never know what I want to do/read at that moment).

    1. One the Way to the Wedding - Julia Quinn (aka Gregory's story in the Bridgerton series)
    2. The Strawberry Patch Pancake House - Laurie Gilmore (latest installment from her Dream Harbor series)
    3. Crucial Conversations - Joseph Grenny, Kerry Patterson, Ron McMillian, Al Switzler, and Emily Gregory (because I can always use more tools for having high-stakes conversations)
    4. Knit One, Kill Two - Maggie Sefton (yep, exactly as you thought... a knitting-themed murder mystery book.. there is apparently a whole series/genre that I just discovered so I'm here for it)
    5. Gilmore Girls: The Official Knititng Book - Tanis Gray (okay so it's not really a book book but it is a new pattern book so I can knit my way through Stars Hallow and goes with her others that I have - Harry Potter, Star Wars, Disney, etc - and I just got it and was sucked into read the snippets and patterns last night)

That's what I've got going on as far as reading. I should finish Crucial Conversations by next week so I'll need another one to fill that void but otherwise, I have a nicely rounded mobile library... I carry two with me (one in my purse and one in my work backpack), one on my bedside, and one on my end of the sofa.

I wish my life had more time for leisurely reading than it currently does, but when I can sneak it in, I'm reading through "A Darker Wilderness: Black Nature Writings from Soil to Stars". It's a collection of essays and is really excellent.

My all-time favorite book that I recommend to anyone and everyone that likes weird stuff is "Geek Love" by Katherine Dunn. The geek here isn't your modern nerd/dork/etc, but rather the classic carnival geek. It's the most unique, way out there weird and wild story ever. I read it about once a year.

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, Good Omens by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett and The Mezzanine by Nicholson Baker

These three books blend humor and existential musings to make you laugh, reflect on life's weirdness, and walk away with a surprising sense of meaning.

Happy April! Love the book question – perfect for any season. 😊

I recently finished "The Phoenix Project". It's a novel about IT & DevOps, but it reads like a thriller – highly recommend if you enjoy problem-solving stories, especially in a tech context!

Also, currently reading the "Project Hail Mary" by Andy Weir which is really fun sci-fi.

The Peter Diamond series sounds cool, I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the rec!

Curious to see what everyone else is reading!

I have always been a sucker for short stories!

Started out as a kid with ghost stories, started reading humor in high school but as an English major, I started reading various collections. "Lost in the Funhouse" by John Barth was the short story that made me realize I want to study literature. Sherman Alexie made me grateful that I stayed in the department, and I would recommend any of his books.

Before then, Woody Allen and Steve Martin are both comedians with incredible humorous collections I still treasure. The New Yorker also has published collections of their humorous short stories and there is some gold in there.

It's autumn (fall) in Australia, which in my opinion is an excellent time to curl up with a book!

I have really been enjoying The Thursday Murder Club books by Richard Osman - there are currently 4 in the series and are all really good reads.

Although, Matt's penultimate question in the Developer Trivia Tower has gotten me excited to re-read my favourite book, Jurassic Park next!

I'm currently reading Silo (Wool) by Hugh Howey. I recommend starting with the first book of this trilogy, as it explains the origins of the Apple series Silo. As usual, the story in the book is deeper and richer than the TV adaptation.

In Spain we say "Marzo ventoso, Abril lluvioso hacen a Mayo florido y hermoso" (Windy March, rainy April make May flowery and beautiful...but in in English it doesn't rhyme :)).

I would like to recommend three wonderful writers, all three winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature: Svetlana Aleksiévich, Annie Ernaux, Han Kang.

I am now reading "We do not part" by Han Kang, but any book by these writers is highly recommended.

    Hi,
Currently I am reading one domestic book called "Kontraendorfin" by Svetislav Basara, that won most precious domestic book award (NIN-ova nagrada) in 2020. (https://www.goodreads.com/sr/book/show/55130856-kontraendorfin)

From the book that I would recommend at this exact moment those may be:

    • "As God Commands" (original 'Come Dio comanda') by Niccolò Ammaniti
    • "The Elementary Particles" (original 'Les Particules élémentaires') by Michel Houellebecq
    • "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro

    But there are many more.

    Hope you will enjoy it

    Regards

I'm currently catching up on the David Baldacci books that I have missed over the last 2-3 years.  He builds characters who are aspirational in their patriotism and sense of duty.  Types of people we need in the US today.

Everyone has such different interests in books.  I'll throw mine out there.  I'm currently reading a series by Karen Lynn "Relentless". I'm on book 3 called Rouge right now.  When I say reading, I am an audio book person, so I read while spring cleaning (did you catch that?) and driving around town.

Most recent was The Coffinmaker's Garden by Stuart MacBride. It is apparently the 3rd book in a series of books surrounding main character Ash. A good mystery book, had me wanting to come back to read more. I picked it up at half price books and read it before realizing there were 2 other books in the series. I'll have to go back and read them!
