I am looking to add a custom greeting that appears when a customer opens a WebMessaging Chat to thank them and let them know that they are being connected to the next available agent. Can you tell me how to achieve it?

From your Architect Messaging Flow use the Send Response block to send an initial greeting before routing the message to an agent: https://help.mypurecloud.com/articles/send-response-action/

Indeed, @crespino suggested good approach: keep in mind you can also enable Auto-Start in Messenger Configuration, so that conversation can start without having to wait for inbound message first.
