What is the skill/trait you find more powerful in your career?

  • 1.  What is the skill/trait you find more powerful in your career?

For me, it's my ability to pick things up on the fly and translate them from technical to business people in order to better help them understand the situation.

I don't know if I'd call it powerful, but I'm usually one of the first people to challenge an idea when it gets presented. Not because I'm being negative, but more because I like to start a deeper conversation.

I'm the guy who will ask, "What exactly do we want AI to do here?" or "Why are we using AI for this when we can already accomplish the same thing pretty simply without it?" Is AI actually solving a problem, or are we doing it just so we can say we deployed an AI feature?

Some Directors seem to appreciate that approach, while others can be a little apprehensive when I start poking holes in an idea. I guess I just like pressure testing Ideas and see how much ROI they have before investing energy in solutioning them.

I think I can say that my ability to learn quickly is one of my strengths, and it helps me a lot in many different situations.

For me, it's continuous learning and curiosity. Technology keeps changing, so being willing to learn, experiment, and figure things out as you go has probably been the most powerful trait in my career.

The skill I value most isn't a specific technology, it's the drive to keep expanding my knowledge. The tech landscape never stands still, and being comfortable stepping into unfamiliar territory, testing new approaches, and learning through experience has been invaluable.
    Thanks,

For me, it's curiosity combined with the patience to investigate.

In our AVA and quality projects, some of the most useful findings have come from opening the actual conversation behind a metric and asking, "What happened here?"

A customer leaving after receiving the information they needed tells a different story from someone leaving because they couldn't get help. You can miss that distinction if you stop at the summary.

Jonathan's point about translating technical topics into business language also resonates with me. Understanding the issue is one part; explaining why it matters and what we should do next is what makes the finding useful.

For me, it's not so much a skill as a capacity for rapid learning.

    Hi Jonathan Nolan!

Spot on, Jonathan! That ability to "translate" tech jargon into plain business language is a massive superpower.

In my case, the two things that have saved my neck the most in my career are patience and a drive to keep learning.

Anyone working with tech, APIs, and infrastructure knows that things rarely work on the first try. You need serious patience to debug weird production issues, hunt down bugs, and stay calm under pressure. Paired with that is the mindset of never-ending learning: tech moves insanely fast, so being eager to pick up new tools and learn new concepts from scratch is just part of the job.

At the end of the day, you can always look up documentation, but having the patience to fix tough problems and the drive to keep learning is what really keeps you going!

The skill I value most is problem-solving.

Every issue feels like a puzzle that needs to be solved. I'm the kind of person who can't fully relax until I get to the root cause, which keeps me motivated and constantly learning. I enjoy breaking complex problems into smaller pieces, analysing each part, and working through them until everything clicks.

I'm right there with you Akhil!

I would say that's my strongest skill as well. Troubleshooting or problem-solving.

I actually enjoy investigating and looking into different approaches to discover what is causing an issue and eventually finding a solution!
Some times it's not even an issue, but a problem-solving on how to best deal with a new requirement/scenario, etc. But it's a puzzle to be solved either way!
