As Robert stated, it is not possible at this time, Once the org is activated, the short name cannot be changed, but I also found the following on the Product Ideas Lab: Update Org Short Name so would be worth adding your vote and use case to the idea.

I find it perplexing that this isn't possible. One of the issues that PureConnect faced was that all object names were also their Unique Identifier, so you couldn't rename ANYTHING! User Objects were the biggest pain with this.

When Genesys Cloud was put together (first as Orgspan, then PureCloud and now Genesys Cloud) everything moved to using GUIDs, allowing stuff to be renamed - whohoo!

Given the Org has a GUID, I'm somewhat confused as to why allowing the short name to be changed is so difficult? There are many times this would be useful - businesses change their names for any number of reasons, so it's not unreasonable to expect to be able to "rebrand" the Org!

That being said, at least for me, it's not a hill I'm prepared to die on. If it can't be done, it can't be done (whatever the reason) and we just need to be mindful of that when creating ORGs. (I have one I support whose "short" name is over 65 characters long!!! 😂 It would be nice to be able to advise them to shorten it...)

As a person that provisions orgs quite often and has made the mistake of having typos in the org short name, I totally understand your complaint.  Without getting into the nitty, gritty details, the short name can't currently be changed due to a decision that was made long ago at the inception of Genesys Cloud (PureCloud) when it was used as a unique identifier of sorts and that dependency remains in place today. 

However, there is an Idea requesting the short name to be able to be changed: https://genesyscloud.ideas.aha.io/ideas/OP-I-434.  And there is work in progress that will allow us to be able to alter that short name at some time in the future.

And who here remembers that this was the root level identifier tied to every sub element in Orgspan that related all those individual elements back to the org?  Must have been about 20 years ago for that.
