December Question of the Month: What's Your Favorite Holiday Story?

  • 1.  December Question of the Month: What's Your Favorite Holiday Story?

    Posted 22 days ago
Edited by Nicole Milliken 22 days ago

That time of year is upon us where we give, receive, and reminisce. As we enjoy the holiday season, we thought the December Question of the Month should be reflective of that reminiscent spirit. So we ask:

What is your favorite personal holiday story?

It can be a story that everyone loves to re-tell each year or a holiday experience that you'd like to share. Answer our December QOTM and you'll earn a new badge for your community profile!

    I'll go first:

My mom loved to make Christmas more interesting for us kids, so she'd write on little scraps of paper our clues for the Christmas Scavenger Hunt. We'd look everywhere and find little gifts hidden and the hunt just made it even better! One year, we had a cryptic clue and searched the entire house to only come up empty handed. We found out hours later the gift was actually in the backyard in the form of a trampoline!
It was such a surprise and a great way to brighten up the gift reveals!

Now you go! Can't wait to see how your holiday stories spice up the season!

A lot of my favorite memories from growing up center around Santa and being real or not, listening for sounds on the roof, etc. When I was little, I think in 1st grade, my friend and I had a fool-proof way to prove if Santa really existed. We would both bring in tags from presents we had received from Santa and compare the handwriting to see if we had a match. The handwriting was different when we got to school the next day, and we thought we had it all figured out. I told my mom about our findings when I got home, and she told me "Of course they don't match, do you think Santa has time to write out all the gift tags? That's the elves job!" That quick reaction and matter-of-fact delivery kept the illusion and the Christmas magic alive for a little while longer, especially for my younger brothers as well. I'll have to keep that one in mind if my future kids try something similar when they get to that age!

    Hi,

Winter holidays for us, northerners, were more about foggy mornings, layers of sweaters, and endless snacking, than it was about snow. The delicious (and deceptively "healthy") treats our grandmother & aunts kept preparing, which made the season feel like one long food festival. A variety of snacks to munch on, at anytime & mostly made out of dry fruits, berries, clarified butter, jaggery, peanuts etc etc .
By the time Feb. or March rolled around and the sweaters came off, the extra 2–3 kilos were proof of just how much we indulged during November-through-January.

    thanks

As Christmas comes around again this year, I remember how quickly time passes and the importance of being near family. Family isn't just about those in your immediate family, but people that make you feel like you are part of their family. After both of my parents passed and losing one of my older sisters 2 years ago on Christmas day, it just reminds me that it's important to live life. This year, I'm spending my holidays with a friend/co-worker in another country. My favorite memory with my family is putting up a Christmas tree and adding all our handmade ornaments on it, along with ornaments we made for our parents.

I have a bunch...will try to narrow it down :-)

My wife and I married a week before Christmas in 1988 (while I was in the Navy), and the following year I was on a Western Pacific deployment for our first anniversary and that Christmas. It's a bittersweet memory...missing our first anniversary, far from my young wife on Christmas...but I also got to experience the most amazing Christmas Eve in Singapore. I've never seen anything like it elsewhere. The main cross streets in the shopping district were blocked off, wityh huge decorations everywhere and full choirs singing in various places, music filled the air, and the streets packed with people even at midnight celebrating the arrival of the Christ-child.

A pic or two that hardly do it justice

My favorite holiday memory is the year I landed my first job and got to buy a few small gifts for my family with my own money. I'm from Curiúva, a small town in the countryside of Brazil, so it wasn't anything fancy. But it meant a lot to me. I still remember their smiles every December.

Starting new traditions with my kids has been a real holiday highlight. I don't remember the year exactly, but my favorite was the first year we stayed home on Xmas day. The year prior, we'd hauled our very young kids to seven different gatherings in multiple cities over 12/24-12/25. It was a breaking point, and I decided never again. The next year began our tradition of staying home, putting out a spread of snacks, and just enjoying the day.

I love the first Christmas for each baby, but the best is at 2 or 3 years old, when it's the first Christmas they are excited to see if Santa came.

Growing up, our extended family lived in the UK, so every Christmas was just my parents and my brother here in Australia.  One year we decided to travel to the UK to spend it with all of the family and it was hands down the best Christmas I ever experienced.  Having gone from hot Summer Christmases to an actually snowy Christmas was my most fond memory.  The trip was full of a lot a great memories, but prior to christmas day we travelled to London for a few days and ended up getting stranded between two airports for 24hrs before we could fly back to Belfast.  I'll never forget that.

My favorite holiday memory, specifically from Christmas, is the year I tasted the sweet suspiro again after so long. As a child, I would devour it by the handfuls. When I bit into it again, it was like traveling back in time: with every little piece, I felt like a child once more. It's a magical experience to eat it whenever I can, and it fills me with happiness by reliving those memories.

You can say that you do find them around! They're probably called meringue in your language. They're those light and airy little sweets - crunchy on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth. A lot of people also make them at home. They're really good.

My mother used to make something similar...meringue with chocolate chips inside, and sometimes peppermint in the meringue

It's not one I hear every year, but the first time I heard it, it instantly became my favorite. It's a poem titled THE SOLDIERS NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS by Lance Corporal James M. Schmidt. I didn't serve, but I've got family members who have, so this poem allows me to honor them and the sacrifice they've made for our country. Tear jerker!!

Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,
In a one bedroom house made of plaster & stone.
I had come down the chimney with presents to give
And to see just who in this home did live.

I looked all about a strange sight I did see,
No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.
No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with sand,
On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands.

With medals and badges, awards of all kind
A sober thought came through my mind.
For this house was different, so dark and dreary,
I knew I had found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly.

I heard stories about them, I had to see more
So I walked down the hall and pushed open the door.
And there he lay sleeping silent alone,
Curled up on the floor in his one bedroom home.

His face so gentle, his room in such disorder,
Not how I pictured a United States soldier.
Was this the hero of whom I'd just read?
Curled up in his poncho, a floor for his bed?

His head was clean shaven, his weathered face tan,
I soon understood this was more than a man.
For I realized the families that I saw that night
Owed their lives to these men who were willing to fight.

Soon `round the world, the children would play,
And grownups would celebrate on a bright Christmas day.
They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year,
Because of soldiers like this one lying here.

I couldn´t help wonder how many lay alone
On a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home.
Just the very thought brought a tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees and started to cry.

The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice,
    "Santa don´t cry, this life is my choice;
I fight for freedom, I don´t ask for more,
my life is my God, my country, my Corps."

With that he rolled over and drifted off into sleep,
I couldn´t control it, I continued to weep.
I watched him for hours, so silent and still,
I noticed he shivered from the cold night´s chill.

So I took off my jacket, the one made of red,
And I covered this Soldier from his toes to his head.
And I put on his T-shirt of gray and black,
With an eagle and an Army patch embroidered on back.

And although it barely fit me, I began to swell with pride,
And for a shining moment, I was United States Army deep inside.
I didn´t want to leave him on that cold dark night,
This guardian of honor so willing to fight.

Then the soldier rolled over, whispered with a voice so clean and pure,
"Carry on Santa, it's Christmas Day, all is secure."
One look at my watch, and I knew he was right,
Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a good night!

I can still remember the year I got my Super Nintendo. 1991, same year they released. I remember getting like 7 games for it which, knowing what I know now, was crazy expensive for my parents. I don't know if it had to do with my brother being born earlier that December and they wanted to do something for me, who knows. But I also remember being allowed to stay up way later than my normal bedtime to try all the games out.

Even now when I boot up Super Mario Brothers on my switch and the title screen comes on, I always think back to that Christmas.

There are lots of options for favourite holiday story but one that comes to mind at this time of year. My daughter's name is Eve. On her first Christmas Eve we took a photo (with swanky 4Mega pixel digital camera) with tinsel on her head by the tree to create a card to hand round to family with Merry Christmas Eve. Since then she would get a "Merry Christmas, Eve" on Christmas day and she would reply no, that was yesterday.

The joy of language and commas but remembering a first Christmas each time.

For me, it was the year I got the N64. Don't worry, I thoroughly investigated the house way before the big day to make sure "Santa" wouldn't let me down, but I don't think I slept the night before I received the payload and then I remember throwing a fit when I had to leave my precious system behind to go visit Grandma. Do I have regrets? Never!

My mom was always an extreme decorator, especially when it came to nativity scenes. She collected them from different cultures in different styles (my favorite was made of tightly rolled newspaper).

One year, I am probably 15 or 16, Mom went even more extreme and put Christmas tree clippings around displays, which frequently included candles (you can probably see where this is going). We are having our party. Friends and family are gathered to eat, drink, be merry, etc. I am leaning by the sink and something in the hallway catches my eye.

I ask the following question as earnestly as I can, "Hey mom, it looks like your nativity is on fire?"

The whole room looks in the direction I am pointing and then, panic ensues. Dean grabs the pot of potatoes and pours that over the display. My dad starts filling up another pot of water. I just stand there, very much with a "they've got this, my job is done" mentality.

The nativity couldn't be saved, the wall was charred black (had to be repainted), but the house didn't burn down and Mom learned a valuable lesson. I was later asked, "Why were you so calm?" The truth is that I couldn't tell if it was on fire or an elaborate display. Neither answer would surprise me.
