It's March 1st, which in this community means a brand new QOTM (Question of the Month). Since we are currently doing the Oscars Ballot contest and then following-up in a few weeks with the March Madness Brackets Challenge, we wanted to know:

What is your biggest competitive achievement?

Now, don't just think sports. This can be spelling bees, holding your breath for the longest time, or even an art contest. What's the talent  you've been recognized for? Answer this question and you'll get a the new QOTM March badge to add to your profile!

In the meantime, make sure you play in our Oscars Ballot contest and nominate a Community Rockstar for more ways to win and achieve!

This is a tough one.... I think my biggest achievement is winning a Customer Service Award at work, way back in 2009. When the presenter described why I won it, all I kept thinking was that I was just doing my job!

If we're talking competitive, not letting my kids ever win at Mario Kart. They need to earn that top spot in the house.

In High School, I quit sports to do competitive theater events, so I spent most weekends putting on a suit, driving out to an empty campus and going classroom to classroom performing various 6-10 minute pieces for a panel of judges. Most competitions hosted by regional high schools or colleges, but the tournament that I always wanted to win was the Gatlinburg tournament because all of the theater kids descended onto the small town of Gatlinburg and took over a hotel for the weekend.

It was the largest tournament of the year and the only tournament where. my public school from eastern Tennessee would face off against the the private, arts schools from Nashville. Who doesn't want to beat the arts schools?

My junior year, my partner and I won the Duo Acting award, and my senior year, I made it to the finals in two events. Grainy photo below as proof that theater competitions are real and I'm somewhere in there. I still have my three trophies from this event.

So many events in my life have been phenomenal accomplishments, but I would have to say above everything I have done, nothing stands out more than raising my 4 kids to be responsible, caring, and confident young adults.  When I see the mess the world is in and the pettiness of this generation, I lavish in the knowledge that my 3 sons and 1 daughter know what they want in life, are working on achieving it on their own, and are serving God and country in their own way, being fighting cyber crime, becoming a surgeon, serving as a US Marine, or working to get into medical missions.

    Just how????? - Imgflip

I certainly have a competitive streak, can't let people win, they have to earn their win, like I did... Though these days I prefer co-operative games.

Back in the Nintendo 64 days, Goldeneye was the one where whenever I played with friends or against my older brothers there was a long list of rules to try to handicap me. And Mario Kart, have to second Seean on that one. What do you mean she is only 5 and doesn't know how to use slide boosts, that is no excuse :P

Board games - I get pretty competitive. In my friend group we are all pretty fiercely competitive. There have been a few occasions when someone has stormed out mid game due to dastardly tactics employed, all fun and games at the end though.

But the greatest amongst them? As a farther of 2 daughters aged 5 and 2 everyday is a competition and a victory just getting them to school and fed and watching them grow.

I love reading all of these responses. I thought my household was the only one that had no mercy on Mario Kart, but I was wrong, haha. I'm definitely NOT a sports person, so I'd have to say my biggest competitive accomplishment would be academic. I won a "Sunshine Lady" full scholarship after doing several interviews and testing. The money came from Warren Buffet's sister and I remember when we went to the meet-n-greet ceremony, the sister came in with a Faberge Egg purse. I didn't question whether the gemstones were real or not, because I knew the answer!

In highschool, I trained my tail off and it paid off as I was selected to be part of an honor choir who travelled to and performed at Carnegie Hall.

To make a lasting impression, I suggested we stand out from the rest of the schools who were attending by memorizing the entire 45 minute Latin piece.

We were the only ones invited back the next year!

What makes this even more special is, after my performance I met my parents. It turns out my Aunt also sang on that same stage - the SAME requiem 20+ years before.

WOW. That's so cool! A real celebrity. A few follow-up questions:

    1) Was this when you met your parents for the first time, or do you mean, you all met and hungout and that is when they told you about the aunt? (sorry if this is too personal, but wasn't sure how monumental a moment this was)

    2) Do you still speak Latin or know that requiem by heart?

    3) Do you still sing? Thoughts on Karaoke?

    HA! I don't mind answering. =)

We were away from our parents for roughly 5 days in NYC. We had a strict schedule due to rehearsals and stayed in a hotel during that period (and limited contact with our parents because we were doing like 12 hour days between practicing, breaks, and little bit of sight seeing).  After the performance,we were able to mingle outside to spend time with our families. It was during that time that my parents told me how my Aunt performed there many years ago. As she's no longer here with us, it's such an honor to know two Turners were on that same stage.

    2. I don't speak Latin, but I can say with absolute certainty that I still have the requiem memorized. The soprano's solo is a bit fuzzy - but to be fair we were not expected to remember that part.  (But fun fact - my fellow altos and I had to memorize BOTH tenor and alto pieces as the tenor section wasn't as strong - so I not only have the words down, but two different parts!)

    3. My singing consists of AHL games or other local events in my area, but primarily just at home. I had injured my vocal cords after Carnegie and it cut my range from 4.5 octaves down to 3ish - so it was a big blow at the time. However, I've always preferred harmony over melody so it worked out in my favor.  And Karaoke? BIG FAN - I just need my friends to come out of their shells so we all can let loose!

Such an interesting question!  I am honestly not competitive.  I tend to be most proud of accomplishments that are done in the background.

Non-Competitive accomplishment I am most proud of is the ability to recall lyrics from 80's music!

This is a fun one! I don't consider myself terribly competitive, but here are a couple noteworthy things:

I beat the old NES game Bart Versus The World. It's single player so it was more like me vs the game rather than competing against other humans. Not the most well-known game, but the last level was really hard to navigate. I want to say that the 'prize' for beating the game was Bart throwing endless pies at Mr. Burns, but I might be wrong. Definitely something along those lines.

Back in the early years of my career when I was a customer service rep, I received the very first Employee of the Month award when it was rolled out.

Also, in first grade I received the "greenest award" for my Halloween costume. I went as Sprout, the Jolly Green Giant's sidekick. I'm sure all of the other green costume wearers were devastated.

    Hahah!

When you said "Green costume" I thought you mean like eco-friendly or something. Not literally green. That made me LOL!

And also on a weird video game note, I don't remember the Bart one, but I did play "The Three Stooges" on NES and that also involved pie throwing! A very obscure game not many have heard of...

In my youth I enjoyed a good athletic contest; could be running, skiing, rollerblading or possibly a rigorous paintball course with my sons. I also played video games and a favorite was Crash Bandicoot, I could get past the toughest levels (my boys would come and get for assist when they were stuck :) )

Currently I play Beat Saber via oculus competing against my previous high score. It is a great workout and gives me a goal to strive for.

Mine isn't competitive in the normal sense of the word. Almost 20 years ago, when I was loving life as a SAHM, I got a little bored. My house could only be so clean, you know? Well, I had taught myself to knit and I loved making hats. I live in west central Florida so there isn't a huge calling for hats here so I created a charity called Hats For Heroes. I was making hats and received permission to ship them to US service men and women overseas and here at home recovering at the Walt Reed Medical Center. My husband made me a website and overnight I had a small band of crafty souls helping me create hats, amputee warmers, socks, and lapghans for our brave men and women. It took off so well, that H4H was featured in an online magazine next to the Wounded Warriors Project! I mailed our last shipment several years ago but it will still be my proudest 'competitive' achievement.

I think my biggest competitive achievement would have to be an academic one - when I got in to an Innovation and Entrepreneurship course where only 40 Norwegian students got in, and I got to do a summer semester at UC Berkeley and an internship in SF.

Fun fact: While I was living in SF, I actually lived really close Genesys' former headquarters in Daly City. This was back when I was a student, and before the internship/summer course, I had been working part time at customer service besides my studies back in Norway, and we used Genesys (Engage) back then.

One day when I was out running, I all of a sudden saw a really familiar logo on a building. That was the old Genesys logo. Little did I know back then, that later I would be working closely with that same company and their products.

I was never much of a sports kid growing up, but I remember winning a first prize on an arts competition at school when I was around ten or eleven - I built a replica of the USS Enterprise using recycled materials like plastic plates, PVC pipes and cardboard! My uncle was always a big geek and my dad helped me build it.

On a more recent note, shortly after switching positions here at my company, I was left responsible for the squad when my co-worker went on vacation, and although I was a bit overwhelmed at first (with being put in charge so soon after starting in a new area and being kind of on my own) I managed to do what was needed, and ended up being awarded as one of the stand out performances of the division!

Winners (always a pair of individuals) of the game were presented with a certificate which usually hung in their office for bragging rights. I do like (well, LOVE) to win, but the best part of the day was getting everyone together out of the office for just plain 'ol fun.

I am SO over the top competitive I have to control myself. Enjoy teams sports all my life and individual when challenged. Was captain of our Women's Softball competitive team that won a state championship; that was exhilarating.  Tell me I can't do something; I will figure out a way I can.  I think my most proud achievements stem from proving myself as a woman in the technology world.  From college to career I am a team player and practice, nope scratch that...LOVE, troubleshooting, researching and knowledge sharing. When I can get folks to collaborate and build something desired or unthought of for the better of all or the majority -- THAT is an achievement that makes me go home with a smile on my face at the end of the day. It doesn't even have to be IT, it's anything that makes life easier, better, exciting, FUN!

    Have a WONDERFUL weekend!

I was a little more. Nowadays I only compete when it means something important, not just competing for everything.

My biggest achievement is working where I am and with such an amazing team.

I have been extremely thankful to work with such amazing and innovating people around me that influenced me to want to be more out-of-the-box and also an innovator. We worked on creating a dashboard to combine our data for STA and embedded into the cloud space. We continue to innovate and do more with our STA. We also work with Genesys STA PMs to work on used cases and ways to enhance STA. I am happy to see how much I learned and how far I have come with the help of those around me and for the constant collaboration with Genesys and our org.

Proud to say I received this award in 2023 for the Youngstown Area YMCA Community Cup:

2023 Youngstown Area Community Cup Captain of the Year
I'm more proud of my teammates and the company that I work for though!
Our team always gives their all for the YMCA Community Cup!

I played traditional sports all through high school (i.e. Baseball, Wrestling, etc.).  However, my first win cam in the form of a state championship paintball tournament.  We placed first place in a tournament my friends and I didn't plan on going to until the day before.  This was a pretty fun day and my only 1st place trophy.

Hmmm...a few things come to mind if I dig back...

    • Simply graduating from the US Naval Academy. Almost failed out the first year, but made it through
    • Earned my medals for Expert Pistol and Expert Rifle that first year at USNA
    • Navy Achievement Medal for my work supporting the families of deployed reservists during Desert Storm as XO of a Naval Reserve Center
    • Beat the milk challenge soon after I joined Interactive Intelligence, which (oddly enough) opened a lot of doors and built relationships with developers that last through today
    • 4 great kids and 4 grandkids...building a legacy
    • Just had my 25th anniversary with I3/Genesys

Aside from having a wonderful wife and raising four great kids, one of my proudest moments was the day I pinned on my Air Force pilot wings.

In my early 20's I joined a Darts team with my Dad.  He's always been into the sport all his life, so it was great experience to also play.  We won our league a couple of times and one year I competed on an under 25's tournament with some players who are now big professionals in the UK.  Whilst we came runners up in that tournament, I walked away with a 180 badge for hitting that score in the tournament.  Darts is a great game and I'd recommend it to anyone to try.
