I think getting back a ping from something on the public side of the AWS infrastructure will tell you very little about the health of PureCloud, which I assume is the goal. From that sense the status page gives a much better picture.
If an end customer does want to do a check of their own they could periodically request some sort of data via the API. That will tell you a lot more than just seeing that the infrastructure is answering.
