    Hello,

    In term of audio quality, what are the Advantages/Disadvantages of using Genesys PureCloud Softphone VS WebRTC technology ?

    Hi Charaf,

    I haven't used the Softphone much, as WebRTC is so easy to setup and comes in as default with modern browsers.
    From an audio quality perspective the Codec will have an important part, you should aim for the OPUS codec, which incidentally is the default on WebRTC, and will provide optimum audio (https://www.opus-codec.org/comparison/) between users and Edge.

    I appreciate it's only part of the question, but hope it can help.

    In Phone Management section, we can list all the preferred audio codec in the Media configuration for the softphone.

    We can make ​Opus at the top list.

    So maybe in term of audio quality, they have the same codecs.

    The main difference with the PureCloud Softphone is that it connects directly to the Edge over the LAN (presuming you edge is on-premises in the same location as the computer running the softphone). The WebRTC phoen communicates with the edge across the internet. So, call quality for WebRTC is dependent on your ISP and the reliability of your internet connection.

    If you lose the internet connection, the PureCloud softphone can still function while connected to the edge across the LAN or WAN. The WebRTC phone cannot function if the internet connection fails.

    The Codec options is a good point, you can run PCMA with Softphones.

    Regarding the QoS, for:
    • Softphones - Can be applied by GPO
    • WebRTC - Requires the Desktop App

    Not much as far as functionality and features, but you have to keep the softphone up to date and it relies on local resources more than WebRTC does.  If I remember, I was told that the softphone is similar to the one used by PureConnect, so that should tell you something.

    Also, the Softphone is only compatible with BYOC Premise w/ Edges. You cannot use it with cloud media (Genesys Cloud Voice or BYOC Cloud).

    From bandwidth perspective which is lighter ?

    Whether Softphone or WebRTC which consumes less bandwidth ?
    Is there any reference document regarding this ?

    The bandwidth each phone requires depends on the codec you configure to be used with the phones. If they use the same codec then they use the same bandwidth. Both the Softphone and WebRTC phone support Opus. You can calculate the bandwidth required using the bandwidth calculator available through the Resource Center:

    Note: this calculator assumes that the phone (trunk) is configured to use Opus.

    You can use physical SIP phones (Polycom etc.) or the SIP Softphone.

    Are your agents on your LAN, or remote over VPN?

    Thanks for your response. I there anything else which might replace WebRTC? The reason I am asking is that I understand other vendors provision an option where upon log into cloud, you can either select webRTC or softphone for which you need to only install a software on your computer. That software essentially replaces webRTC and you do not need to have either hard or soft SIP phone.

    Under what circumstances would WebRTC not be a viable option for you?

    Thank you for the response. The circumstance is uncommon in which there is a bug involved where interferes with WebRTC. While I am resolving that issue, trying to find a short-term solution.

    You could always use Remote Number.  That could be a cellphone, Zoom, Teams, DID number on a PBX, etc...

    In our test for a remote user, WebRTC had better audio quality than the Softphone. WebRTC showed advanced mic settings (Automatic Mic Gain, Echo Cancellation, Noise Suppression) but Softphone did not.
