  • 1.  Transcoding to G.711

    Hi,
    I have a bunch of MP3s that are going to be used as prompts. I'd like to transcode them all to G.711 mu-law .WAV files and have tried using Adobe Audition - but they sound HORRIBLE!
    I expect them to be lower quality, but even during silences, there is what sounds like rain (or static) over the top.
    Does anyone have any suggestions as to a different method or utility to do this?

    Hi Paul,

    I mainly use Audacity to edit and convert audio files which is an open-source software.

    Most often you can just select Export to WAV in the file menu, but you can also use FFmpeg plugin if the defaults don't convert them properly.

    I've been using Switch Audio Converter for over a decade to take various audio formats and turn them into phone-ready versions.  Super easy to work with, and it has presets for PCMU (G.711u).

    I'm with Paul here.  NCH makes great software and at a very reasonable price.  

    One thing to remember is that you need to reduce the file before saving.  Once you read in the MP3, change these parameters:
    1. Stereo to Mono
    2. 44 kHz to 8 kHz
    3. 16-bits to 8-bits

    Once you have it in that format, then save as wavefile with PCM or ADPCM encoding.

    Back in the day...(2003 or so) Interactive Intelligence used (Sonic, then Sony) Sound Forge to convert all the hold music files...

    Looks like a version of it is still out there, but I like the idea of Switch Audio Converter much better...

    Thank you for the responses, everyone!
    I grabbed a copy of Switch Audio Converter and it seems to be doing the job. What is making me scratch my head is the fact that Audition is butchering the files! 😮
