Does anyone know of a way to take the value captured with an Ask for Slot and then use that value in a Set Intent action?

I've tried to achieve this in multiple ways and none of my attempts have been successful. Either it can't be done or I'm missing something. It's hard to imagine that this isn't possible though.

Could someone please confirm this for me?

Could you share what you are trying to do, or even a snippet of your bot flow?

Set Intent action doesn't always work the way you expect / want, it has a pretty singular purpose. 

Set Intent action works fine if you set it before the ask for intent block, like so:

This is a simple example of a user responding to an Ask for Slot action, and my flow logic attempting to use that value to Set Intent action in an upcoming Ask for Intent action:

I wish Set Intent worked this way, or that there was a clear Intent action, but alas no. As far as I am aware, once intent is set there is no resetting it without leaving the bot. Slots on the other hand, you can set, clear and re-set as much as you like.

So generally I would either use slots instead of intents for this sort of use case, or spit out the intent as an output, and then in my inbound flow pass that back in as input in another bot flow call, either to the same bot or a different bot.
