    As a beginner developer, what usually helps you understand a new technical topic more easily: practical examples, step-by-step explanations, diagrams, or hands-on exercises? I'd love to learn how I can make my teaching more effective and accessible.

    As a new developer, I find hands-on exercises the most useful for understanding a new technical topic. Practical examples and step-by-step explanations are helpful, but being able to actually try things myself helps me understand the concept much better and remember it for longer.

    I think a combination of a short explanation followed by a hands-on exercise would make learning more effective and accessible for beginners.

    Hi Leticia,

    For me, I think hands-on learning combined with step-by-step explanations is one of the best ways to learn technical topics.

    A recent example for me was the Genesys Voice Bot course. Going through the course content was useful, but being able to take those concepts into our own Lab environment, build them, test different scenarios and troubleshoot when things didn't work as expected made a big difference.

    I also find that breaking things down into one or two steps at a time makes complex topics much easier to absorb.

    For anyone learning Genesys, if you have access to Genesys Education, there are some great self-learning resources, and depending on the training, you may also get access to a VM/lab environment for hands-on practice.

    For me, the combination of learn → build → test → troubleshoot is where the learning really sticks. 😊

    As someone who has mentored junior developers, I've found that the most effective approach is usually a combination of all four, presented in a specific order:

    1. Start with the "why" using a simple real-world example.
    2. Explain the concept step by step to build understanding.
    3. Use a diagram or visual to show how the components fit together.
    4. Finish with a hands-on exercise where learners apply what they just learned.

    For many beginners, jumping straight into theory can be overwhelming. Practical examples create context, diagrams help visualize the flow, and hands-on exercises reinforce the learning. The exercise is often where the "aha!" moment happens.

    For example, if teaching APIs:

    • First show a real use case (retrieving weather data).
    • Then explain requests, responses, and endpoints step by step.
    • Use a diagram showing the client-server interaction.
    • Finally, have learners make a simple API call themselves.

    One thing I've noticed is that beginners often struggle not because a topic is difficult, but because they can't see how the individual pieces connect. Visuals and practical projects help bridge that gap.

    My recommendation: teach concepts with examples, explain them clearly, visualize them, and then let learners practice immediately. The combination is usually much more effective than relying on any single method alone.
