Not sure how many contacts your talking about, but you could create an organization for each agent in External Contacts, then assign contacts to that organization. That way when they click on organization in external contacts, and then click on their "organization" they would see a list of contacts specific to that organization.
Not sure how interim a solution you're looking for, or for how long, but it is an option.
