To kick things off, I have a favorite story of the bizarre and unexplained. Technically, I have two: My grandmother once said that she was on a family trip and flew next to a UFO, but I no longer have a reference for that story, so for the contest I am going to submit a story from my friend Kala. I called it
"The House House Guest"
Kala was attending a bachelorette party in the heart of New Orleans.
This was the girls' second day of the trip, so it was their most action-packed agenda. They planned on sightseeing, doing a historical tour, and, of course, a night of dinner, drinking, music, all things fun and exciting on Bourbon Street. To make sure she was energized for the evening's activities, Kala decided to skip the tour just before dinner to rest in the air bnb.
The house the girls rented was older, so with the right amount of force, anything would creak: from hinges to floor boards. After the girls left for their tour Kala got to enjoy a few minutes of peace and quiet as she started easing into a nap, but she was quickly startled.
From outside her room, she heard what could only be footsteps in the living room pacing between there and the kitchen.
What struck her as odd was that she never heard the front door open. Maybe one of the girls stayed behind, too? Or came back to grab something? She wasn't sure. So she went to her bedroom door, opened it and asked if anyone was there. When she didn't hear anything, she took a few steps out to inspect the living room and kitchen. Asking again, "Is anyone here?"
Nothing.
But she could have sworn she heard something.
Back in her room, she shut her door, and got in bed. A few minutes passed and she heard the foot steps again, but this time they were approaching her door and stopped just outside of it.
Her door opened.
She could see there was no one on the other side, but she still moved out of bed breathlessly, quietly, to shut the door and make sure it could not be pulled open. Seconds later it opens again.
What creeps her out the most was that the door cannot be pushed open because of the door knob. So this time she shuts it and locks it.
Jarred by the experience she decided to avoid the bedroom all together and moved the iPad that she was watching television on to the bathroom, locking that door, and she gets in the tub and watches tv there.
A few minutes later she hears footsteps, this time in the bedroom and hears them move from what must be the bedroom door to the bathroom door. Then...she sees the bathroom doorknob start to turn.
At this point she is fighting tears, trying not to make a sound, but not sure what else do. She watches. The doorknob frequently turns or jiggles while she stays motionless in the tub.
Eventually her friends return. She can hear them laughing and getting ready for the evening. It's not until she hears one of them knock on her door the she gets out of the tub and leaves the bathroom, finding no sign of anything or anyone, just the locked bedroom door.
