OK thanks. I thought I would just copy the default voicemail flow and in my task, instead of "transfer to voicemail" I would use "transfer to flow" and point it to the copy I made.

That is the crux of the matter. There is only one voicemail flow for the entire ORG and not a lot of easy customization points. I put some ideas up a year or so ago about voicemail flow.

Try following this article: Replace the built-in voicemail system greeting with blank audio - Genesys Cloud Resource Center (mypurecloud.com)
It means editing the Voicemail Flow, which is a chore in itself.

I created a group and enabled voicemail. I replaced the default greeting with a custom one. When I call the voicemail it plays my custom greeting then plays a secondary default message stating "Please record you message after the tone. When you are finished recording you may hang up or press # for additional options"
Is there a way to get rid of that second part? I only want it to play my custom greeting.
