  • 1.  On-Hold music, PPL and PRS licenses (UK)

    Hello all,

I've a question regarding music licenses, prior to going live with a new Genesys Cloud solution.

On our ancient Avaya we have some classical music as on hold, installed by our old vendor. We swapped about 2 years ago and in 2022 we will be moving away from this platform to Genesys Cloud. However, it's my gut feeling that tells me would I use the current on hold music from our Avaya, we might face a fine if we do not register with the pplprs.co.uk.

Would we use the ancient Genesys Build in on-hold music (I say ancient as it was original distributed with the ININ 1.2 CIC product and later PureConnect), then do we need to register for this as well?

Either way, I can't get a real clear view on this, anyone dealth with this before/

If you purchased the music with the Avaya, then you most likely can use it with Genesys Cloud.  As for getting music you can get royalty-free music from many sources.

As for content, you can use your own jukebox program like this one from NCH software:  https://www.nch.com.au/ims/index.html allow you to create your own MOH files that include music and marketing messages mixed together.

If you want a company to do these files for you, here are some I have suggested in the past:

There are several other companies out there that will create custom messages with professional talent and royalty free music.

That brings us to the last point.  With MOH, the FCC restricts any rebroadcast of radio outside of their broadcast area, including through phone systems and the federal laws around copyright infringement require any MOH to use licensed or royalty free music.   Here are some sources for these files that can be downloaded and used with your system:

    Hi Robert,

Many thanks for your response.  Unfortunately they are very strict in the United Kingdom and even though you might have Royalty free music you still might require a PPL - Public Performance Licence.

As to the current On-hold music I have not been able to find any documents stating its Royalty status. I inherited the system 3 years ago and kicked the vendor out of the door for bad performance and half of the licenses and information that should have been shared with us never was, including this info.

Hence I try to get clarity on it or just bite the bullet and pay £ 3.5 K in annual license fees.

    Any UK based opinions appreciated.

    Kind regards,

Here is a couple of good sites:

    https://freshphone.com/business/avoiding-lawsuits-know-hold-music

    https://www.flipconnect.co.uk/company/blog/do-i-need-a-license-to-play-hold-music-on-my-phone-system

All indications are the UK will stick it to you.

The only exception I found was recording of pieces over 75 years without renewed royalty licensing, meaning something recorded before 1947 with no estate attached.
