That is unfortunate, for contact centers that only handle 1 conversation at a time, it uses up a bunch of screen real estate with little to no benefit.

This update is applicable to all interaction types. With this update, Genesys Cloud UI Interactions view will always display fullwidth as previously announced deprecation (see here). Look out for beta announcement to come.
