The 2024 Paris Olympics starts July 26th, 2024 and if you're as excited as I am, you're going to love our new Question of the Month for July! This year, several new sports are being recognized to win those coveted medals, such as breakdancing, skateboarding, sports climbing, and 3x3 basketball. That got me thinking:

If you could pick a brand new sports event for either the summer or winter Olympics events, what would it be and why?

There are so many wonderful sports that still have not made it to the biggest global arena in the world. If I could choose, I'd pick ballet. I read that ballet athletes are the most physically fit people in the world, and I feel like this could easily be judged in an Olympics competition (much like ice skating). What do you think? Tell us in the comments below and you'll score this awesome July Olympics-inspired badge for your profile:

Thanks for participating and I hope you'll be rooting for your country for the Paris Olympics starting later this month!

While I wish I could say quidditch, I will say bowling. It was introduced into the olympics back, I believe, in the 80's it never really made it as an official sport. Bowling, while not vigorous, is very competitive. I have been to a bowling alley while a league event and seen the passion and competitive nature in some of the teams. I believe bowling would be fun and amusing to watch.

I would love to see competitive cheerleading as an Olympic sport. I have zero skill, talent, athletic ability, or grace so I am always gobsmacked by their talent.

After watching the silliness of the speed walking in Japan, I thought they could combine that with Nerf Target Shooting and just to throw another totally silly event in, how about giving the walkers a couple of steeple chase water hurdles into the mix.

These are all great suggestions! My kids, and especially my daughter, got super into American Ninja Warrior after a birthday party at a ninja gym a few years back, so I'll throw ninja into the mix - or whatever the formal sport name is. The upper body strength of those athletes is unreal.

I was the last person out on my team in elementary school once, I stood alone for about 30 seconds against an army of 10. Quickly became the scariest moment of my life.

Sometimes I wonder what life would have been like if I had won out? I feel like I would be a way different person now. Probably on dodgeball tour or something.

Somewhat related. Did you know that tag is now a professional sport? It's pretty wild to watch.

I'd definitely add Darts to the Olympics.  One of the most popular casual sports in the world (if you can really call it a sport lol) .  You don't need to be a super athlete or anything, but as long as you can throw a dart, you could have a chance to represent your country :D

I'll add one here for the Winter sports, but surely a 5v5 Snowball war should be a sport at the winter games? Need I explain why?

I also wrestled in High School and FreeStyle.  Took 5th in state one year.  I was a ringer and would come into matches at whatever weight was needed based on availability of other wrestlers from 138 to 175.  Once they put me against a 190 guy and I was totally crushed - literally.

No, no...kite fighting. Like when we were kids. Glue ground glass onto your string to about 10 feet down from the kite. You win by cutting your opponents string and setting their kite loose.

I'd be interested in eSports (competitive video games).  It's an area with incredible growth from 2010 to 2020 and doubled in revenue generation 2020 to 2022.  Viewership of eSports is projected to be 600 million in 2025, while the Beijing Winter Olympics brought in 2.1 billion viewers.  The sport itself lends well to televised broadcasting, the athletes fit the Olympic mold of early 20s / late teens and has all the same challenges and accomplishments of other traditional sports including prize pools, champions, star athletes, crazy fans, performance enhancing drugs, team / coach drama, etc!  Also in a generation of children and adults raised on YouTube and Social Media, eSports and streamers are becoming the new celebrities and athletes that the youth want to aspire to be.
